The Cuban Skateboarding Crisis reveals a side to Cuba and its people not often heard or seen in the west.
Cuba has a thriving skate community, founded on each individual's passion for skateboarding. However, there are no skate shops in Cuba and none of the skaters can get sponsored. Boards are almost impossible to come by, and spare parts are non-existent. Skating equipment is so prized that if anything breaks, it is restored, fixed and somehow made to work again.
Unlike western countries where there are plenty of skater shops, Cuban skaters have to be resourceful if they need any new kit. Due to trade blocks Cuban skaters can't even get products from mail order companies. The most common way of them obtaining boards is via friends they have made in other country’s carrying skateboards over for them when they visit.
